The story:
Our dear friend Megan spent several months last year visiting doctors for symptoms that eluded diagnosis and eventually forced her to leave work without pay. A trip to the emergency room in early 2009 finally yielded concrete information. At age 36, and without a family history of cancer, Megan was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer that had already spread to her liver, brain and bone. Everyone was shocked.
Treatments began immediately, and chemotherapy and targeted therapy have started to shrink her tumors. Everywhere, that is, except for her brain. When her doctor prescribed additional, cutting-edge treatments that could eliminate the brain tumors and prevent new growth, her insurance company, California Blue Shield, denied coverage.
Like everyone, Megan wants to live as good a quality of life as for as long as possible. For her, this now means fighting for the very best treatments available. So after unsuccessful appeals to California Blue Shield, and as bold as ever, she decided she would get the uncovered treatments she and her doctors believe are the best for her -- by paying for them out of pocket.
This is an expensive endeavor. Megan needs our help paying for the humane and logical care her insurance company has denied! The uncovered costs are:

- Up to $30,000 for stereotactic brain radiosurgery (which can eliminate brain metastases) and associated procedures
- Up to $3600 per month, indefinitely, for Tykerb, a targeted therapy that crosses the blood-brain barrier to prevent future brain metastases.
